The body of knowledge engineers depend on today is gleaned from empirical data of failures—test failures, design failures, process failures, material failures, etc. We rely on the lessons learned from these failures to design resilient solutions to various problems. Henry Petroski in To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design asserts, “A good judgement is usually the result of experience. And experience is frequently the result of bad judgement. But to learn from the experience of others requires those who have the experience to share the knowledge with those who follow.”
This blog is a product of not finding the website I wish existed for my learning and development—a website made by and for mechanical design engineers to share failures and learn from them together. I hope your career and learning will benefit from Vicarious Failure.
The author—
I am a mechanical engineer with a decade of problem-solving, machine design, product design, and process design experience. It’s been a bumpy, mostly exciting, and humbling journey!
